7 Simple Self Defense Tips For Women
These tips are simple but effective. Share this with your loved ones: wives, sisters, daughters and mothers. You don’t have to be a black belt, or professional fighter to save your life.
ONE - Situational awareness: attackers are looking for easy targets. They are opportunistic. They are hunters looking for easy prey. When it comes to being easy prey, it is not about size, the length of your hair, or some other obscure thing. It is about attitude. Avoid seeming nervous, being overly nice, or distracted on your phone. No matter how tall or small you are ,the way you carry yourself goes a long way.
TWO - Listen to your intuition: you have a built in internal alarm system. Myself, and many other self defense instructors recommend the book “The Gift of Fear” by Gavin De Becker. The be afraid of seeming rude, racist, or hostile. If there is a situation where you do not feel safe, leave! You don’t have to explain yourself. If you have a gut feeling, listen to your GUT! If you are wrong, who cares?
Three - Control the distance: If someone is 12 feet away from you, then you can hear them just fine. A person does not need to be any closer than that. You can control the distance with movement, or by using your voice “I can hear you from there, don’t come any closer…” from 12 feet, you can hear the person. If someone is 6 feet away then he or she is within striking range and you must prepare to defend yourself if you are not able to run.
Four - Just get away: Self defense does not mean you have to physically fight the person off. Run if you can, fight if you must. Use your voice; scream, yell, do whatever you have to do to draw attention and get away from a potential attacker.
Five - Fight Dirty: Do whatever you have to do. There are no rules when it comes to protecting yourself. Put hard things into soft places: finger in the eye, elbow to the throat, knee to the testicles, use your teeth, nails and any bludgeoning or sharp item you can find.
Six - Carry a weapon: Never leave home without it! A firearm is the most effective weapon. In order to be comfortable and proficient with it, you have to train, train, train. Pepper spray is a great quick & dirty device because you can still use it at a distance. Other weapons include a taser, knives, and any poking/ stabbing device. While these are all great it requires you to be up close while using it. Any weapon you have make sure you put in the extra time to become proficient.
Seven - Train your body! Crawl, walk, run, lift heavy things. Build muscle consistently. Make your body as strong as possible. You may not be as strong as the attacker, but the stronger you are the better chance you have. Also train in the art of fighting. At minimum take a self defense seminar. You can also dive into an art like Jiu Jitsu or Muay Thai. Make sure you have a coach that comes highly recommended. The more you train, the more you desensitize your body. The more of a chance your fight or flight kicks in instead of freezing while you are in danger.
